Chapter Five

The Office of the Evangelist

The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor (Luke 4:1819).

…Then the owner of the house ordered his servant, “Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.…Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full” (Luke 14:21,23).

But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry (2 Timothy 4:5).

Ollie didn’t look like an evangelist. Well into her 70s, her hair almost gone, maybe two teeth left in her mouth, she was about five feet tall and almost as wide. The first time I saw Ollie she was on crutches, hobbling through the door into the church where I was preaching a revival. Yet an evangelist she certainly was.

The small west Texas town had practically dried up and blown away in the years since its glory days as an oil boom town during the 1920s and 30s. The tiny church where we were holding the revival meetings looked as though it was about to do the same. By the time I met Miss Ollie the first night, I had already greeted 19 grumbling, complaining, downcast saints of God as they trooped into the church building as if they had come for a funeral. I thought, This is really going to be some week!

Then Miss Ollie came in. Looking at her, my first thought was, I really don’t want to talk to this lady. After 19 “sickly, sorrowful saints” I was already depressed enough. Nevertheless, I stuck out my hand, smiled, and said, “Can I help you in the door?” She declined my help, so I asked, “Well, how are you tonight?” Her reply surprised me.

“I’m just fine, glory to God.”

“You are? What makes you think so?” I asked.

“Well, Jesus is alive, and He lives in my heart. He’s coming back again, and my name is in the Lamb’s book of life. What more could anybody want?”

I started to ask Ollie if she wanted to preach that night! Over the next two weeks of revival services I watched quite a contrast in that church. On one side were the 19 sour saints whose favorite song seemed to be “I shall not be moved,” or “Everybody will be happy over there” (but not over here!).

Then there was Ollie. She came alone that first night, singing her favorite song, the one she sang every night, “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine.” The second night she brought another lady with her.
